The battle of good vs evil…..

I cannot bring myself to listen to newscasts anymore.  They make me feel depressed, heart-broken, and disgusted at our society.  How did this happen?  When did the world become such an awful place?  I want to imagine life as God created it, in the Garden of Eden.  Oh, what a beautiful, majestic place it must have been!  But wait…  newsflash!!! Dateline Garden of Eden….. Eve eats what God says not to, Adam didn’t stop her, she blames him, and he blames the serpent!  Hmmm, maybe the “apple” hasn’t fallen too far from the tree.

We all know the story from Genesis 3:1-19.  God arrives on the scene to prosecute and sentence… to the woman – physical pain, to the man – a life sentence to hard work on cursed ground, and to the serpent – to always crawl on the ground and eat dust to be the eternal sign of the Fall and of evil for mankind.  Ever wondered why so many people are afraid of snakes?  Makes sense…  Back to the story, specifically verse 15 where God speaks to the serpent.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Ge 3:15 (ESV)

At that time God declared that there would be a struggle, a war, between Satan and mankind.  Between the woman’s offspring (humanity at large) and Satan’s offspring (anyone serving his kingdom of darkness).  Whoa…  God knows our struggle between good and evil because he declared it existed way back then and from that point on God has been working to restore His intended Garden of Eden.  Ultimate restoration will happen once Jesus returns and for those who believe, will bask in His New Jerusalem, where there is no pain, sadness, death or sin.

And he who was seated on the throne said,
“Behold, I am making all things new.” … Rev 21:5a (ESV)

But until then, we must understand that God is good, and that we cannot burden ourselves with the evil in the world.  That’s what Satan wants, and if we focus only on the evil, we have turned our eyes away from God and good and perfect gifts He has placed around us… and Satan wins.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.  James 1:16-17 (ESV)

It’s healthy to watch the news, and feel heartbroken for sinners, but it’s not healthy to walk around and feel dejected and live in the pit of despair for things God has in His control.  It’s healthy to prepare and be prepared if evil strikes, but we should not live as if preparation is our only savior.  Ladies, take the time today (and every day) and notice God’s good in the world.  The fields, the mountains, the snow, even man-made things are God’s work and especially your flock.  Thank Him continually for the vast amounts of good in this world that DO NOT make the nightly news.

Tend your flock well, and bask in His glory today for His good and perfect gifts!
